Montgoyon, a little village, April 5

We drove about 200 kilometers today from Gennes, taking only back roads. One of our goals is to avoid all toll roads.  We took the N10 most of the way and mostly in mist, cloud and drizzle.
We are booked for two nights at a chamber d'hôtel in a little village for only €60 per night.  A lovely couple, Michel and Francine, added three bedrooms to their house with a little lounge.  We are the only guests.  After a short rest, we took off on TINY back roads for a little medieval village, Aubeterre sur Dronne, stopping first for some apples as I had not eaten.  Good thing we have GPS!

Aubeterre is in southern Charente on a little river, very popular with kayakers but today was not a kayaking day.  However, the sun did come out while we were there and it actually got to 13C which is about 55F.  We were even able to sit on a bench in the sun!  hurray!

The village is over 1000 years old and built on a hill.  Narrow streets and houses made of white stone.
A lovely town square in the middle.  There is an underground church which we did not pay to see, but where relics were hidden in the 12th century.

We took a different, even more tortuous route back and bought a chicken and salad to eat at our gite.
Michel offered us a drink of pineau de Charente, a fortified wine made by his father-in-law.  He sat and chatted with us for well over an hour.  He is an airline pilot for Hop airline.  Tomorrow, he is off to Nice, Lille and Rome.  His wife was off to Angouleme to pick up their daughter who was on a school trip to Belgium.  We discussed the fast pace of modern life, the harsh and good aspects of capitalism and socialism and found we share many views.  Michel did some aviation training in Roswell, N.M.
Another good and interesting day.
