Lazy Day in Dubrovnik, May 3

Today we only walked
into the city in the morning.  We had breakfast at Gusta Me, sat for almost two hours checking email and getting a hotel in Zagreb.  We met two Polish girl hitchhikers who had amazing luck getting here.  They never had to camp, but found people who took them in.  Needless to say, they were both very attractive.

We decided to read and relax the rest of the day and watch ships and boats.  There was a fireworks display in the evening. It was a lovely vacation day.

A few words about our host.  Refika is a 70 year old dentist who is in practice with one of her daughters.  Yesterday, her husband came home from the hospital.  He is dying of cancer.  She showed us a photo of bin just a year ago, hale and healthy. Very sad, but a strong woman.  She told us that they bought their lovely house in the early 1970s and that it was spared during the siege, but that soldiers stayed there.  She admired Tito and reminisced about the days when the state provided for people.  She said that Yugoslavia loosened up towards the end of his rule and she used to travel twice a year by ship to Italy to shop.  She does not like what capitalism does to people.  Like the woman from Mostar and Ana in Plitvice, she was not optimistic about the future in the Balkans.
