Wandering around the Loire Valley, Day 23

Stone out building and tulips at 'our' house
Another wonderful day in the Loire Valley! It was sunny enough to hang the clothes out.

Chateau outside of Breze
We started off for the chateau at Breze.  Just before we got there, we found another chateau which we photographed, which was also very beautiful.  Breze was built in the 11th and 19th centuries.  It is famous for its underground network of passages and has the deepest dry moat in all of Europe.  We chose not to go into the chateau, partly as it was 11 Euros each and we thought that, if Mike and Nancy want to go to a chateau that this might be one to save for them.

Then, we drove to check out the Abbaye royale de Fontevraud which we plan to visit with Michael and Nancy.  We walked around the little town; the Abbaye was closed today anyhow. (Mondays)

Next, we drove to another chateau, Montsoreau on the Loire itself.  The chateau was built in the 15th century and was made famous by Alexander Dumas.  Again, we decided not to go in. (another 11 Euros).  We will pick which ones we decide to go in when Michael and Nancy arrive.  Mark and I have been in a lot of castles and chateaux, so aren't really bothered if we go in them at all.

Next, we drove upstream through Saumur and found all the wineries that we might want to visit with Michael and Nancy.  We drove to Gennes where there is a Roman amphitheater, but it is closed in the off season.  From there, we drove via Rochmenier which is a troglodyte village.  Again, we only located it and decided that it may be a place we will visit.

Then, we drove back to the Super U to shop.  We sat in the garden in the sun and Mark made a wonderful cauliflower, mushroom, onion, cream sauce over pasta.  We also explored the two gites on the property where Jecca, Willy, Otis and Henry, Jo and Tom stayed last summer.  Then, we went into the cave on the property where the proprietor keeps his wine.  Very, very cool to have your own cave!  We sat in the sun as long as we could.
