It is not easy to prepare for a day and night of tennis in the desert. You need to be ready for intense sun and heat as well as wind and chill.
On the Tennis Channel, they have a clip called "Bag Check" where they ask players to show what is in their tennis bags.
This is our bag check from yesterday's full day of tennis, not including the normal wallets etc.
Mark's bag:
2 cans of sun block, an orange, a frozen bottle of water, a long-sleeve thermal shirt
Barbara's bag:
2 oranges, a frozen bottle of water, a bag of pecans, long underwear top and bottoms, a jacket, gloves, scarf, socks
Of course, we both had hats and sunglasses. We also both wore light-weight long pants to shield us from sun burn and Barbara wore a long-sleeved light shirt over a short-sleeved shirt.
During the evening, Barbara went to the car, conveniently parked pretty close this year thanks to Mark's handicapped placard, and got Mark a jacket and a blanket to share.
Usually we take food, but decided not to bother with much this time, opting instead for waters and clothing. We got a refillable-all-day drink for $9.00 that we shared. We ate concession food which we don't usually, but it seemed worth it with our full day.
Overall, we succeeded. Neither of us got sun burn. We paced ourselves and took shady breaks when we had sunny seats. We drank a lot of water and, even though we were tired by day's end, we felt like we coped really well.
